About Paycheck Calculations
Understanding your paycheck is essential for effective personal finance management. Your gross salary is the total amount your employer pays you before any deductions. However, what you actually take home—your net pay—is significantly less due to federal income taxes, state taxes, Social Security contributions, Medicare taxes, and voluntary pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions and health insurance premiums.
This calculator uses the 2024 federal income tax brackets to estimate your federal tax liability. The United States uses a progressive tax system, meaning different portions of your income are taxed at different rates. For example, a single filer earning $65,000 would pay 10% on the first $11,600, 12% on income from $11,601 to $47,150, and 22% on the remaining amount up to $65,000. Your effective tax rate is typically much lower than your marginal (highest) bracket.
Social Security tax is applied at 6.2% on earnings up to the wage base limit of $168,600 for 2024. Medicare tax is 1.45% on all earnings, with an additional 0.9% surtax on income exceeding $200,000 for individuals. Pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions reduce your taxable income, which can lower your overall tax burden while helping you save for retirement.
Please note that this calculator provides estimates only. Your actual paycheck may differ due to additional local taxes, specific employer deductions, tax credits, itemized deductions, and other factors. For precise payroll calculations, consult with a tax professional or refer to your employer's payroll department.
